Cedarwood ( Juniperus virginiana ) – Has the ability to ground our emotions and promote a state of calmness.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) – Frankincense has a calming effect on our emotions, helps diminish our anxiety, fears and sorrows. Frankincense has, among its physical properties, the ability to slow down and deepen the breath, and to breathe more slowly and deeply soon produces feelings of calm, which are very conducive to prayer and meditation. Frankincense is particularly active with the lungs and is one of the best oils for respiratory infections.
Lavender (Lavendula augustafolia) – Offers relaxing benefits to calm the mind, improve mood, and provide general feelings of euphoria. Lavender essential oil helps to manage the symptoms of ADHD by affecting the release and the absorption of the positive neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. These biomolecules are necessary for the body to relax.
Orange (Citrus aurantium) – With properties of pinenes and aldehydes, Orange helps soothe your central nervous system while adding positive emotions.
Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) – Valerian Root essential oil is useful in a diffuser blend to help promote deep relaxation before sleep. It can also help to focus scattered energy and quiet the “mind chatter” of a hectic lifestyle. It is believed that valerian raises a specific chemical within the brain, which in turn creates a calming impact on the body that might help treat nervousness, restlessness, and sleeplessness. While these are the more common uses for the herb, it is also believed that valerian root can be useful for ADHD.
Vetiver (Vetivera zizanoides) – Its aromatic effect on the mind is grounding, calming, and balancing, while its other notable actions are antiseptic, antispasmodic, immune-stimulating, warming, sedative to the nervous system, and stimulating to the circulatory system, to name a few. Vetiver oil’s calming and soothing properties are said to dispel anger, hysteria, and irritability, and reduce neurotic behavior. This in turn reduces stress and tension. These revitalizing qualities make it helpful with physical and mental exhaustion, and for addressing issues ranging from general aches and pains to insomnia and anxious feelings.
A case study published in the American Medical Association Journal by Dr. Terry Friedmann M.D. ( http://files.meetup.com/1481956/ADHD%20Research%20by%20Dr.%20Terry%20Friedmann.pdf ) with children who had been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. The children inhaled essential oils of vetiver, lavender and cedarwood, one at a time for 30 days each, 3 times a day and as needed. They were also administered via an inhalation device at night, this could have been diffusing. The results were impressive. The inhalation of the oils proved to settle the children’s brain waves back into normal patterns and improved their school performance as well as their behavior.
Notes: This blend of oils will help to relax you in situations of stress, but its use will not cause you to go to sleep during normal daily activities.
