Legend of the Four Thieves
While there are probably more than a few versions of this story they all center around one event during the middle ages, the Bubonic Plague. During that time, four thieves went from house to house to rob those who had passed on due to the illness. After the thieves were captured and tried for their acts of robbery, a judge offered leniency in exchange for information on how they were able to be around those that had contracted and died of the plague long often enough to rob them but not be affected by the illness. At this time of the plague striking Europe, as a measure of protection, physicians were seen wearing long black robes, wide brimmed hats, and masks that appeared to have a beak. The masks were said to have contained a combination of herbs, spices, and essential oils that the physicians would breathe in order to keep themselves safe from those that had contracted the illness. Their long black robes were also said to be doused in a similar fragrant mixture.
- During cold and flu season, make an immunity rub from coconut oil and Thyreos for an immune boost. 2-3 drops of Thyreos to 1 tsp carrier. We keep a half pint made up for convenience.
- Mix with vinegar or water to make a powerful and natural household cleanser.
- Diffuse through the home ventilation system.
- Mix with a carrier oil and massage over body when sick.
- Diffuse to help recover, more quickly, from sickness.
- Make a sanitizing spray bottle to carry with you. Spray shopping cart handles, toilet seats, restaurant tables, etc.
- Thyreos (Shield) works well in a roll-on applicator.
- For a sore throat, one drop in a glass (never put essential oils in plastic) with enough water to gargle has been known to eradicate the soreness.
- Place a drop in your toothpaste.
- When I start feeling sick or have been around someone sick, I hold one drop on the roof of my mouth for 60 seconds and then sip some water, to boost my immune system. If I’m already sick, I do this 3x a day.
- These are only a few uses. There are many more, be creative!
Essential Oils included in this blend are:
Lemon (Citrus limonum) – Lemon oil has a high vitamin content, which makes it a wonderful booster for the body’s immune system. It further stimulates white blood cells, thus increasing your ability to fight off diseases. Lemon oil also improves circulation throughout the body. It is a great cleaner, which is why it is used for cleansing the body, metal surfaces, dishes, and clothes. It’s powerful disinfectant properties, make it commonly used for cleaning surfaces such as butcher’s knives and blocks that can become contaminated very easily.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) – A study done, reported that cortisol levels decreased after simultaneous massage and inhalation of rosemary essential oil, and also found that the free radical scavenging activity in the test subjects’ bodies also increased significantly. Antioxidants are a valuable weapon to fight off infection and disease, with regular use either topically or inhaling it can support your immunity system and help you fight off diseases linked to free radicals.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) – Besides its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, eucalyptus oil has powerful antibacterial and anit-microbial properties, as well. It stimulates the immune system response and a research study, published in Clinical Microbiology & Infection found that eucalyptus oil may have antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the upper respiratory tract.
Cinnamon Bark & Leaf (Cinnamomum zeylanicum or verum) – Due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties, it is effective at treating external and internal infections. It helps destroy germs in the gall bladder and the bacteria present in staph infections. Cinnamon stimulates the immune system, prevents infection and is anti-septic. Cinnamon oil can also enhance the properties of other oils mixed with it.
Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllus) – Clove oil is useful for supporting and boosting the immune system. Its antiviral properties and ability to purify blood increases resistance to a multitude of diseases, because the antioxidants in clove essential oil scavenge the body of dangerous free radicals that cause a multitude of diseases.
Orange (Citrus sinensis) – Wherever there is a cut or abrasion, there is always the chance of the wound becoming septic due to a bacterial infection. This is even more likely when the wound occurred from an iron object, because then there remains a chance of it becoming infected by tetanus germs. Essential Oil of Orange can help people avoid septic, fungal infections and tetanus as it helps inhibit microbial growth and disinfects the wounds.
Oregano (Origanum vulgare) – Oregano not only protects against viral infections, but also protects against bacterial infections. When a synergistic blend of oregano, clove and cinnamon were studied it was found to be effective against several strains of bacteria.
Therapeutic Comparisons of Cinnamon Bark & Cinnamon Leaf
The two different cinnamon essential oils have some differences in their chemical composition, obviously because they come from different parts of the same plant.
Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil – Steam distilled from the leaves of cinnamon.
Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil – Steam distilled from the bark of cinnamon.
As a means of aiding health and controlling pests, cinnamon-bark oil was until recently considered superior to cinnamon-leaf oil, as Jeanne Rose notes in “The Aromatherapy Book.” In the 1992 volume, Rose recommends the bark oil exclusively to kill germs and to use in massage oils for boosting circulation. But more-recent research indicated that the active compound, cinnamaldehyde, is equally available from both the leaf and the bark oils. A 2007 study conducted by Spain’s Universidad de Murcia found that cinnamon-leaf and cinnamon-bark oil, along with clove oil, contained antimicrobial properties, which the food industry could theoretically use to fight Listeria monocytogenes. Additional research done by the National Taiwan University in 2004 focused on cinnamon-leaf oil’s potential use in natural health products. Researchers concluded that the leaf oil has “excellent anti-inflammatory activities.” These studies suggest that cinnamon-leaf and cinnamon-bark essential oils may be used interchangeably in at least some applications.
This blend of essential oils has powerful anti-microbial properties. The oils are highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-infectious and help to protect the body against such illnesses as flu, colds, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, sore throats, cuts, and so on.
In November of 2005, an important discovery was made: Mold, even heavy infestations of toxic mold, could be eliminated from homes and office buildings using a blend of essential oils: Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary. (See the studies in Dr. Edward Close’s book, Nature’s Mold Rx.) He recommends this model diffuser: http://heritageessentialoils.com/heritage-pro.php
Studies conducted in 1997 at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, showed the anti-bacterial effectiveness of this blend of essential oils against airborne microorganisms. One analysis showed a 90 percent reduction in the number of gram positive Micrococcus luteus organisms after diffusing the Thyreos (Shield) blend for 12 minutes. After diffusing for a total of 20 minutes, there was a 99.3 percent reduction. Another study against the gram negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a kill rate of 99.96 percent after just 12 minutes of diffusion of this blend of essential oils.
Dr. Edward Close and Jacquelyn Close documented in “over 100 case studies, verified by an independent EPA-approved environmental laboratory, have shown that organically produced concentrated plant extracts, also called essential oils, when diffused in the air, eliminate mold spores in the air and on surfaces in as little as 24 hours.” MoldRx4U.com
There was an 82% reduction in Micrococcus luteus bioaerosol, a 96% reduction in Pseudomonas aeruginosa bioaerosol, and a 44% reduction in Staphylococcus aureus bioaerosol following 10 minutes of exposure to the blend of oils in Thyreos (Shield) that was diffused for a given amount of time.
